Snakebite Awareness for Pet Owners: A Veterinarian’s Perspective from the Field

Snake encounters are a reality of ranch life across Texas and beyond. For those of us who live, work, and recreate on the land, understanding how to properly respond to a venomous snakebite can quite literally save your dog’s life.

This message comes from Dr. Steve Ruffner, DVM, a real estate agent with Capitol Ranch Real Estate and a practicing small animal veterinarian with over 38 years of experience.

A Personal Note from Dr. Steve Ruffner, DVM

As both a veterinarian and someone deeply involved in the ranching community, I want to share something important with our valued clients and friends.

Unfortunately, snakebite treatment is an area where many veterinarians—including myself earlier in my career—were not properly trained. It is a highly specialized field, and updated research has changed how these cases should be handled.

The bottom line: as pet owners, it is our responsibility to advocate for our animals—because they cannot advocate for themselves.

Understanding Venomous Snakes in Our Region

In Texas and throughout much of the southern United States, the primary venomous snakes include:

  • Rattlesnakes
  • Copperheads
  • Water moccasins (also known as cottonmouths)

All of these are pit vipers, and their venom can cause serious, life-threatening complications in dogs.

Common Misconceptions About Snakebite Treatment

There are several outdated treatments that are still commonly used—but should not be relied upon.

❌ Antihistamines (Benadryl)

  • Do NOT treat snake venom
  • Snakebite reactions are not histamine-driven
  • While not harmful, they do nothing to address the actual problem

❌ Steroids & NSAIDs (Rimadyl, Previcox, Carprofen, Aspirin)

  • Contraindicated
  • Can interfere with proper healing and recovery

❌ Routine Antibiotics

  • Not typically necessary unless infection is present

According to current veterinary protocols, these approaches do not improve outcomes and may even cause harm.

What Proper Treatment SHOULD Include

Effective snakebite management focuses on stabilizing the patient and addressing the effects of venom.

✅ Critical Components of Treatment:

  • IV Fluids
  • Pain management (this is essential)
  • Monitoring through lab work
  • Antivenin when indicated

Key Lab Work to Monitor:

  • Platelet count (CBC)
  • Coagulation times (clotting ability)

If platelets are low and/or clotting times are prolonged, antivenin is strongly indicated.

When Is Antivenin Necessary?

Antivenin is the only treatment that directly neutralizes venom.

It is typically recommended when:

  • Swelling is progressing
  • Bloodwork shows abnormalities
  • Systemic signs are present

Delaying or avoiding antivenin when it is needed can significantly impact outcomes.

Be Prepared Before a Snakebite Happens

One of the most important—and often overlooked—steps is preparation.

Snakebites rarely happen at convenient times. They often occur:

  • After hours
  • On weekends
  • Far from immediate veterinary care

Plan ahead:

  • Identify the closest 24-hour veterinary facility
  • Confirm they carry antivenin
  • Ensure they are familiar with current snakebite protocols

This preparation can save critical time in an emergency.

What About the Rattlesnake Vaccine?

You may have heard about the rattlesnake vaccine that was introduced years ago.

Important update:

  • It has been discontinued
  • It did not provide the protection originally claimed
  • In some cases, it may have actually worsened outcomes

It should not be relied upon as a preventative measure.

Final Takeaway: Advocate for Your Pet

Snakebite treatment is not always straightforward, and protocols can vary. But one thing remains constant:

Your pet depends on you to make informed decisions.

If you are presented with a treatment plan that does not align with current best practices:

  • Ask questions
  • Advocate for proper care
  • Seek a second opinion if needed

Because in a snakebite emergency, timing and treatment matter—and your voice matters too.
